Waikato District Council is planning to revoke the Recreation Reserve status from a piece of land next to Davies Park in Huntly/Raahui Pookeka and return the land to the previous owner Waikato Rugby Football League Inc. This revocation is part of a legal process under the Reserves Act 1977, and must occur before the land can be returned.
Revocation of Reserve Classification
Pursuant to Section 24 of the Reserves Act 1977, Waikato District Council are publicly notifying an intention to revoke the classification of land adjoining Davies Park in Raahui Pookeka, Huntly.
Background
The land was originally bought by Council from the Waikato Rugby Football League Inc (WRFL) in 2010 for a nominal amount. The plan was to turn it into a recreational space and build a walkway to Lake Hakanoa. However, no development has taken place, and the land is now overgrown and unused.
Council no longer needs the land for parks or environmental purposes. WRFL has asked for the land to be returned so they can use it for future development and to support the long-term financial sustainability of Davies Park. Councillors have shown support for this idea, and feedback from the Annual Plan process also showed public support.
