What is the Alcohol Control Bylaw?

The Alcohol Control Bylaw is made up of Council’s rules about drinking alcohol in public places. Its aim is to keep everyone safe through reducing alcohol related harm, crime, or disorder in public places through the use of alcohol bans.

This Bylaw includes rules around exceptions to alcohol ban areas and where the alcohol ban areas are located across the Waikato district.

This is your chance to have your say before we kick off formal consultation on the proposed changes to the Bylaw in 2025.

It’s important to note that this Bylaw does not apply to private property, the sale and supply of alcohol, or traffic related offences (while under the influence of alcohol). Rules around the sale and supply of alcohol are managed under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 and traffic related offences are managed directly by NZ Police.
